CoSM Kids in association with CoSM art gallery located in the heart of the Chelsea art district is a multicultural, spiritual art program for ages 4-10. We at CoSM believe that art and spirit lives in the kids at CoSM. With a focus on spirituality, unity and diversity, we intend for CoSM Kids to blossom into a well-established and well-respected art program in New York City.
We invite children and their parent/guardian to explore other cultures and religions with us through storytelling followed by a related art project.
A story from a sacred tradition is read to the children followed by a discussion of the story. After the discussion, kids will be encouraged to draw, paint, collage and sculpt. Art supplies are included along with a healthy snack of fruit, juice, milk and cookies.
Some planned projects are:
Read a Native American story and paint on brown paper in the style of Native American leather painting. Goal is to
have the students think about what life was like in an Indian tribe and how they communicated their stories on to their children.
Reading an Australian Aboriginal creation story, looking at dreamtime paintings and visualizing the creation of the world. Children will then create their own paintings based on how they think the world was created.
The 'Aboriginal Dreamtime' is that part of aboriginal culture which explains the origins and culture of the land and its people. The Dreamtime contains many parts: It is the story of things that have happened, how the universe came to be, how human beings were created and how the Creator intended for humans to function within the cosmos
The Chapel of Sacred Mirrors (CoSM) in Chelsea is the home of a permanent collection of visionary art by Alex Grey. The Chapel and the artwork within have become a context and center for a growing global community that celebrates creativity and spirituality in New York City. CoSM holds events, symposia, workshops, and ceremonies on the full moon and new moon, replete with drumming and dancing.
The Chapel of Sacred Mirrors is a 501(c)(3) organization, supported solely by charitable donations from the community.
